Discomfort precedes victory

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did”—Mark Twain

What did you do last week that made you uncomfortable?

I was out of action with the flu (possibly man-flu) does that count?? I didn’t really learn much or grow as a result of having the flu, so I’m going to say it doesn’t. Which makes today a good time to plan a more useful uncomfortable activity for this week.

I’m going to follow up some leads for our 2018 Leadership Accelerator intake. It’s uncomfortable because I don’t like hassling people. I must remember: This is just how I give people an opportunity to see if the program is the right fit for them. If it is, I know they will get immense value from it. If not, no dramas. So, no need for discomfort.

I find it helps to re-frame my thinking consciously like that. However, the unconscious can be harder to convince. Our unconscious mind can hold on to limiting beliefs and very subtlety guide us away from things we find uncomfortable, even if those things would be incredibly valuable for us.

I find the most uncomfortable task will usually help me learn and grow most, so it often ends up being the most important task to do, right now.

Even though I know that it’s most important, I’m still tempted to defer it. I find new dependencies, new priorities, excuses and procrastination can all appear as forms of unconscious avoidance. We must get into the habit of challenging ourselves when we notice these subtle clues.

Which means, even planning to do it tomorrow is a clue your unconscious may be avoiding.

Solution? Don’t wait, do it today!

I find a good rule of thumb is to tackle the most uncomfortable task for the day first. After that, it all gets a lot easier.

So, if you hear from me today about our Leadership Accelerator, thank you for helping me grow! And if I can connect you to an incredibly valuable experience, you’re welcome!

Oh and, what uncomfortable task are you going to tackle today?
